Our Kitchen {i.e.. where I microwave}

Well, yellow there!
HSR Kitchen Befores
When we first moved into our house I decided that I wanted to pay homage to the kitchen in my childhood home.  My mom has always loved yellow in a kitchen and I thought I would give it a try.  I still love it, don’t get me wrong but I’m now thinking that the way to go with yellow is in the form of accents.

In addition to changing the color, you can probably guess that we lack proper, pretty storage.  Sure, that refrigerator could probably hold a few more bags of chips and judging by the looks of it we’re out of cereal but its…sloppy.  There’s no organization and it constantly gets out of control.  We never know what we have and what we need.  With one of my 2013 resolutions being to become more organized, I think we’re starting off in a pretty good room.
Oh yeah, there’s my buddy (the microwave).  We already made most of the purchases and color decisions for this room and once of the cheapest (and possibly most exciting for me) has to do with our microwave stand.  I’m also working on a solution for the back wall.  I hate that it’s so empty but we also do not have proper ventilation which makes us scared for any art piece we do put there.

I’ve been DYING to try the old upper/lower technique, as Kate discuss here, and now’s the time!  In a kitchen this size, I’m hoping it will help it feel a bit more airy and organic and less stagnant.

Another big must on our list is to change out the faucet.  We’re barely able to fit some of our larger pots under our current one.  It seems like we always have a battle and something always gets spilled.  Grrrrr…

And last but not least, lighting!  You can see one light mounted to the bottom of the uppers above the sink along with our ceiling light.  Ideally we would like both of them to be replaced, budget depending, of course.  If I can’t find something for that white boob light hanging from the ceiling I’ll probably end up DIYing a new shade that will hang from or snap on the old one.

Is anyone else undertaking a mini face lift project like we are?  I would love to hear your stories or see pictures!!!

  1. I love it all. I really considered painting our bottom cabinets a darker color but lighting is an issue in our kitchen [and selling is our new goal] so we decided against it. I'd love to see that though!

    1. I am a weeeeee bit nervous about lighting in there but I think if the dark color stays on the bottom we should be safe. Evenings are our only issue and that boob light fixes that problem, which is also why I'm trying to tweak instead of replace it!
